Work shot to be watched as a single piece, with its own running time, cut and finish. A picture is taken from the point at which a script or an outline is settled, through the shoot, and into the cut. What exists at the end is one finished item with a running time of its own, and the loose rushes it was drawn from stay behind it as source material.
Commissioned video made to do a particular job for whoever asked for it: a piece for a screen, an event, a launch, or an audience inside an organisation. The brief fixes the length and the shape, the shoot is planned around it, and the cut is delivered in the format the commissioner has to work with.
Programme work made to a broadcast shape: a running order, an exact duration, and a delivery specification that has to be met to the letter. Technical consistency across episodes counts for as much as the content, so material is logged and checked as it is made instead of at the end.
Once the shoot is over the material still has to be handled. Rushes are conformed, sound is laid and balanced, picture is graded, and stills are selected, processed and prepared for use alongside the moving image. This is the stage at which a production stops being footage on a card and becomes something that can be delivered.
